A Rewarding Career

Congratulations on joining the field of aviation. A Pilot's job is full of responsibility but it also has great rewards as well.

Much information exists on the net regarding how to become a pilot however it's hard to follow and can be overwhelming. So, you have come to a good place to find out more where information is presented in an easy to follow manner.

Have a Real Yearning to be a Pilot

We think that the most successful people in any career field have a real yearning or passion to do what they do. It gives them that extra boost right from the start to excel. If you are new to flying, you will want this passion and you no doubt have it. Lots of pilots say they always knew in their heart that they would someday fly for a living. It was a dream.

So don’t get discouraged if there are a few bumps in the road on your career path. Becoming a pilot can take lots of time and money and those are two things most people don’t have an endless supply of. Work your way up slowly but surely and always remember your passion.

The Steps
First, go to your local airport and take an introductory flight. You will see how it feels to be behind the controls and feel the extraordinary feeling of weightlessness. If this scares you, you should reconsider you choice to be a pilot. Confidence is key as you will hold many lives in your hands as a pilot.

If you are ready continue sign up to take classes to get your Private Pilot’s Certificate. This can cost several thousand dollars and depending on how much time you are able to fly every week can take several months to obtain. Keep at it, until you can pass your written exam and check ride. You also have to be healthy enough to pass a physical and get a third class medical certificate.

If you are still serious, go for your Commercial Pilot’s Certificate next. Commercial pilot’s can work for pay and can even work as a co-captain with an airline company. This will let you start earning some money to pay for all the money you are spending. If you just don’t have the money to attend an aviation school or even a local expedited flight training facility, try the military. It can be pretty hard to get into their flight program but if you do, you are set! They will train you and when you get out of the military, you will be sought after in the pilot world.

After you gain your Commercial Certificate and rating, you can apply for a job at an airline, usually one of the smaller regional airlines. Remember you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. You may find that many airlines require or prefer a 4 year degree in addition to your Commercial Certificate. The degree doesn’t have to be in aviation. They may accept military experience instead.

Only a pilot who has an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate can be the Captain of an aircraft for a passenger airline. They get paid a lot of money to command the flight and are responsible for hundreds of lives. They must also hold a First Class Medical Certificate which they have to pass every year. If you get a job with an airline, they may help you get your ATP as they train you on their aircraft.

Good Luck!

Great information. I'm assuming this is for pilot licensing in the US. Not much difference from licensing in Canada.
